Sample Applicant Letters

There are many different types of applicant letters. The most obvious one is the cover letter.

But there are other applicant letters you may be required to write.

Examples include the letter thanking a prospective employer for considering you seriously enough to have asked you over for an interview . . . the letter from a student thanking a business for the opportunity after the completion of an internship . . . and a letter requesting a job offer clarification.

Approach writing any such applicant letter as you would the cover letter and CV. Don't think just because you think you may have bagged the job . . . even have in fact been offered the job . . . or have completed your internship . . . you can get away with being less than professional about the entire thing.

Use such opportunities to build bridges and sell yourself again—but more concisely.

There's likely a lot of paperwork that takes up the recipient's time. Don't beat around the bush. Get straight to the point.

Also mention anything you experienced or noticed the prospective employer may find flattering. But be sincere and don't go overboard.

Triple-check what you have written for mistakes and omissions. Ideally, put the letter aside and run through it once again a day later.

Dear [Ms./Mr. Last name],

Thank you so much for interviewing me [Date]. I appreciate it.

I am excited about the prospect of joining a company that I have long admired.

I am writing to let you know how much I appreciate the time you spent getting to know me. I find your enthusiasm for growing the company's talent extremely contagious and look forward to experiencing your leadership on a daily basis.

I am also excited about the company's People Partners project. Your 'INtrepreneur' observation hit the nail on the head.

Incidentally, I made a similar suggestion as a trainee at [Company] in [Year] and was consequently made the HR manager of the equity analysis division.

I would also like you to know that my meeting with some of your HR managers and employees could not have gone any better.

Thank you for suggesting I meet with them.

Not only did they come across as true-blue professionals, interacting with them helped vindicate my decision to pursue what might be the most critical phase of my HR career at [Company] and none other.

I look forward to meeting with you soon and welcome any questions and suggestions you may have.

Thank you, once again.

Sincerely,
