Hardship Letter - Divorce

Dear Ms./Mr. [Last name],

I never thought it would happen to me.

First, I lost my job. Next, my wife lost hers. Last month, I was stunned to hear that my wife had decided to leave me after 11 mostly happy years of marriage. The recession hurts. Real bad.

I now find myself doing odd jobs so to speak and unable to make the mortgage payments.

After the divorce, I gained custody of our two children. [Name] is 11. Her brother, [Name], is 8.

I am now dipping into my savings to give them a decent education and life. My wife has virtually turned her back on us. And I don't blame her one bit.

I have never felt the helplessness that I now feel. I put up a brave face for the kids and am too proud to ask for help.

Which is why I find it embarrassing to be unable to make the mortgage payments and to write you this letter in support of my forbearance application requesting that I be spared the shame of foreclosure.

I was homeless once and wish my children never ever suffer a similar fate.

I am aware that the last few payments were not made in full. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to pay more than $[Amount] a month.

I fully intend to make the mortgage payments in full. But I need more time.

Please find attached information about my finances, the divorce and the alimony in support of this letter.

Do let me know if you have any questions or need more information to process my application.

Please help us.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
